We are now officially into the heart of earnings season with about 40% of companies in the S&P 500 reporting between this week and next. Yesterday, equity markets started the session modestly lower but were able to recoup most of those losses by the end of the session. Today we are on a similar trajectory, but the absolute moves are more extreme. After the open the S&P 500 broke below the closely watched 200d ma (~3,970) and almost tagged the 50d (~3,940) but traders defended these levels and we have recouped a good portion of the losses.

S&P 500 futures sank 1.4% and Nasdaq 100 futures skidded 1.6%. The Nasdaq looks set to open near Friday’s lows, not far from the rally’s lows from early December.
